If You Think To Get To Heaven without Trouble - Ichabod Spencer

If you think to get to heaven without trouble you are mistaken! It will cost you many a struggle! That depraved heart will bleed before it will relinquish sin! It must break before it will be bound up and healed by the balm of Gilead! Salvation is indeed free; the blood that bought it flowed freely from the offered heart of the Son of God. Pardon is easy, but the repentance and faith that embrace it must surmount many obstacles. Never was striving more requisite than in a sinner with a wicked heart and in a wicked world, endeavoring to lay hold on eternal life!

The Highest Form of Blessing - Charles Spurgeon

This is the highest form of blessing when we are not only favored ourselves but are made the occasion for enriching others. Was not this the choice inheritance of Abraham, "I will bless thee, and thou shalt be a blessing"? (Gen 12:2)

They Will Talk Of Jesus Christ for Evermore - George Whitefield

I could still go on, for it is sweet to talk of Christ. Do you not long for the time when you shall have new bodies-when they shall be immortal, and made like Christ's glorious body? And then they will talk of Jesus Christ for evermore.

The Time of Young Men - William Bridge

I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.              1 John 2:14
This time of young men is the overcoming time. I pray tell me, was David an old man when he slew Goliath? Was Joseph an old man when refused and overcame the temptation of his mistress? Were Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego old persons when they resisted and overcame the temptation of the king?

If They See You Strong in the Lord - Samuel Rutherford

Glorify the Lord in your sufferings, and take his banner of love, and spread it over you. Others will follow you, if they see you strong in the Lord; their courage shall take life from your Christian carriage.

Deal With Him Tenderly In Love - Jeremiah Burroughs

It may be that a man for a while may be so overpowered that he is not able to render a rational account of his ways, but wait awhile and deal with him tenderly in love. Consider his personal disabilities and his temptations; give him all the allowance you can. If one means prevails not to show him his error, try another. If at one time you do no good upon him, see what may be done at another.

Their Hearts Do Not Melt In Prayer - Thomas Watson

Others pray, but not "in the Holy Ghost" (Jude 20). They are more like parrots than weeping doves. Their hearts do not melt in prayer: they exercise their inventiveness more than their affection.

How I learned my Theology - Martin Luther

I did not learn my theology all at once, but I had to search deeper for it, where my trials and temptations took me… Living, nay rather dying and being damned make a theologian, not understanding, reading or speculation.

Acting Against One’s Conscience - Martin Luther

I consider myself convicted by the testimony of Holy Scripture, which is my basis; my conscience is captive to the Word of God. Thus I cannot and will not recant, because acting against one's conscience is neither safe nor sound. God help me. Amen.
Martin Luther at the Diet of Worms, 1521

I Want a Faith That - Charles Kingsley

I do not want merely to possess faith; I want a faith that possesses me.
